OUR ADOPT-A-SCHOOL MODEL
We pick one local school to fully adopt as a community partner. This allows us to build deep relationships, understand their exact needs, and tackle classroom challenges side-by-side with school leadership and teachers.
Connecting Generations
Hearts in the Classroom builds meaningful connections across generations by bringing college students and experienced seniors into elementary school classrooms to help children learn, grow, and succeed.
We create opportunities for college students to gain valuable hands-on classroom experience that can support their fieldwork or practicum requirements, while seniors stay active, connected, and engaged through meaningful service and stipends.
By bringing generations together, we strengthen our communities, support children’s confidence and learning, provide practical opportunities for college students, and help seniors remain connected and value.
Easing the Burden for Teachers
We coordinate directly with staff to address critical resource gaps to help ease the financial strain on educators. By providing direct classroom stipends, we help cover some of the costs of essential learning tools and art supplies, making sure teachers don't have to spend so much of their own money to support their student.

Our work is designed to support the entire school community—not just one part of it.
Empowering Young Minds
We help young students build strong academic foundations through focused attention, encouragement, mentoring, and one-on-one support.
Our goal is to help children strengthen their reading and math skills while also building confidence in their ability to learn.
FREE K–3 Tutoring
We provide free one-on-one reading and math tutoring designed to give young learners the additional support they need to build a strong academic foundation.
Building Stronger Classrooms
Teachers have an enormous responsibility. Sometimes an extra set of hands can make a meaningful difference.
Our volunteers provide practical classroom support, helping with appropriate activities, organization, materials, and other day-to-day needs.
By helping with these important responsibilities, volunteers give teachers more time to focus on what matters most—supporting and educating students.
Supporting School Staff
Our volunteers support teachers and school staff by assisting with administrative tasks, organizing lesson materials, and providing an extra set of hands in the classroom, office, playground, lunchroom, and security areas.
By helping with these important day-to-day tasks, our volunteers help teachers and staff support and educate students while helping keep them safe.

Restoring Teachers Lounge & Restroom
The people who care for our children deserve welcoming, comfortable spaces where they can rest, recharge, and feel appreciated.
Through our Teacher & Staff Spaces initiative, we help refresh and improve areas such as teacher lounges and staff restrooms through approved painting, organizing, decorating, renovations when needed, refreshments, and other simple improvements that boost comfort and school morale.

Cultivating Manners & Good Behavior
Good Choices. Good Habits. Good Rewards.
We use School Money as a positive incentive program designed to encourage students to practice good manners, follow lunchroom directions, and make positive choices during lunchtime.
School Money is special play money—it is not real money.
Students can earn School Money for positive behavior in the lunchroom and save it to use at a monthly reward store for approved rewards. The program also gives children opportunities to practice important life skills such as making choices, saving, delayed gratification, responsibility, respect, and positive behavior.

Once a month, we launch a big, exciting reward store right at the school. Students get to spend their hard-earned School Money on toys, books, prizes, and fun surprises managed entirely by our team.
Manners for Life
Manners for Life
We guide children on how to sit politely and enjoy their meals responsibly. By learning how to behave properly in the lunchroom, children can practice positive choices and valuable skills they can use both in school and in public places.
Praise & Encouragement
Praise & Encouragement
We act as supportive cheerleaders, catching children doing things right, celebrating good choices, and modeling respectful behavior.
Our goal isn't simply to give children prizes.
It's to help children learn that positive choices have positive consequences
WHY K–3 MATTERS
The Critical Window:
The early elementary years are an important time for building the academic and personal foundation children will carry with them throughout their education. They are also critical for developing strong reading and math skills.
By fourth grade, students are increasingly expected to use these skills to understand more complex subjects and solve problems. By helping children strengthen their reading and math foundation early, we can help build the confidence and skills they need for continued academic success.
When children struggle with reading or math, the effects can reach beyond academics. They may experience challenges with confidence and behavior in the classroom and may begin to lose confidence in their ability to learn.
That's why we believe early support matters.
Through tutoring, mentoring, encouragement, and individual attention, we want every child to have the opportunity to say:
“I can do this.”every child deserves the opportunity to succeed.
SHOWING APPRECIATION

Teachers and school staff give so much of themselves to their students and their schools.
We believe they deserve to know that their work is seen and appreciated.
Standing in the Breach works with school leadership to create meaningful staff appreciation opportunities, including customized recognition, small surprises, gifts, and other approved ways of saying:
“Thank you for everything you do.”
We handle the planning and support so school leaders don't have to add another responsibility to an already full schedule.
When we support our teachers, empower the staff, and encourage our children, we strengthen the entire school community
